Karmenta adjusts prices to the regional level

It does not make much difference to the level of Karmenta's rates for healthcare products, but the way in which the rates for passers-by are determined at Karmenta will change. We compared the prices (passerby rates) of Karmenta's care products with the prices of the hospitals in Brabant, and adjusted them. Karmenta's prices of healthcare products (passer-by rates) are therefore on average the same as the prices of other healthcare providers in our region.

Some healthcare products have become more expensive, others cheaper. We believe it is important that our rates are reasonable compared to other healthcare providers. Because we do not think it is fair that you (or your health insurer) should pay relatively much for a health care product at Karmenta, or relatively little. In this way, that discussion has been resolved.

There are significant differences in hospital prices. It will therefore always be possible to find a hospital that offers a healthcare product for a higher price than Karmenta, but there will also always be a hospital that is cheaper than Karmenta.

The new passer-by rates will take effect on November 1, 2020. Karmenta will use these rates until we can make a comparison again with the pass-by rates in the region for 2021.

How are prices of healthcare products determined?

If you are referred to Karmenta by the doctor with a complaint, Karmenta keeps track of care activities in our electronic patient file. The first care activity is the consultation in the doctor's office, but also an ultrasound, or blood test, and of course also the procedure or surgery are all examples of care activities that are part of your complaint and your diagnosis. All these care activities together, up to and including the follow-up check and the call appointments later in the process, form the "DBC": Diagnose Treatment Combination.

3 months after the start of your treatment, but not earlier, we pass on all care activities associated with your treatment to a general Dutch ICT system, the "Grouper". And after an extensive and complex series of checks, it determines which healthcare product we can charge you as a patient or your health insurer. A declaration code is linked to that care product and a price is attached to it. Each hospital publishes the prices of all healthcare products. These prices are called the "Passerby rates".
